In this blog, we’ll walk you through how Aussies are spending on their pets, why veterinary care costs what it does, and how you can feel more prepared (and less overwhelmed) when it comes to paying for your pet’s health.
Where do Australians spend their pet budget?
According to a recent infographic from the Australian Veterinary Association, pet food is the biggest cost item for most pet parents, making up 51% of total pet spending.
That’s followed by:
- 18% on products and accessories (think toys, collars, comfy beds)
- 14% on veterinary care
- The rest is split between grooming (4%), training (3%), pet insurance (3%), boarding (2%) and other miscellaneous bits (5%)
What does that mean?
Well, it tells us that most people spend more on dog treats and designer jumpers than they do on professional medical care. Yet, when something goes wrong (say a limp, a lump or a late-night emergency), those vet visits suddenly feel like the biggest cost.
But here’s the truth: veterinary care is a smaller piece of the puzzle than most people realise. And it’s one of the most essential parts of keeping your furry (or feathered or scaly!) friend living a long and healthy life.
Unlike human healthcare, pet health is 100% owner-funded
Here in Australia, most of us are used to a healthcare system that the government heavily subsidises. If you get sick, there’s Medicare. If you need a specialist, you might have private health cover.
But pets? They don’t get that kind of safety net.
Another recent AVA infographic compared the funding of human vs pet healthcare in Australia.
The results might surprise you:
- Human healthcare is 70.8% government-funded, with only 15.4% coming out of people’s own pockets.
- Pet healthcare, on the other hand, is 0% government-funded. That’s right – 100% of your pet’s healthcare is paid for by you, the pet owner. That includes wellness visits, vaccinations, emergency surgery and any treatment in between.
So when you’re at the vet and wondering why there’s a cost involved, remember: unlike hospitals and GPs, vet clinics don’t receive any government support. They often run as a small, local business, and everything they do (from equipment to staffing to medication) is funded without public assistance.
Did you know that hospitals don’t pay TAX!? Vets don’t fall under that category either.
So what exactly are you paying for at the vet?
It’s a fair question. Especially when your dog spent most of the visit trying to climb into your lap and the vet was in the room for 15-20 minutes.
But behind that one appointment is a lot of time, training, equipment, and people.
Here’s a peek at what you’re paying for:
- Years of training: Vets don’t just love animals, they’re also your pet’s GP, surgeon, dentist, radiologist and more. That takes years of study (and not a small student loan). Nurses train for a minimum of one year, some qualifications taking up to 3 years. Then there is the ongoing requirement of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). No travel or cost perks for the veterinary industry I’m afraid.
- Specialised tools: From X-ray machines to surgical gear, all of it’s expensive to buy, run, and keep maintained.
- Safe, regulated meds: Those tablets or injections are carefully sourced, stored, and handled to meet serious safety standards. No PBS rebates here!
- The whole team: It’s not just the vet. There’s reception, nursing staff, admin, cleaning, the whole works.
In other words, you’re not paying for a 15 minute appointment; you’re supporting an entire clinic built to help animals live better, longer lives.
How can you manage vet care costs more easily?
We get it – unexpected vet bills can be stressful. But there are a few things you can do to feel more in control:
Prioritise pet preventative care
Just like with humans, catching health issues early can save a lot of money (and heartache) down the track. Regular checkups, vaccinations, parasite protection, and dental hygiene are small investments that can prevent much bigger problems.
Take advantage of pet health insurance
Pet health insurance is a great way to help cover the cost of routine care and emergencies. They include things like vaccinations, health checks, medication and emergency surgery for a monthly or yearly fee. Like all insurance, there are multiple providers to choose from.
Ask about GAPOnly
