As the shorter days and cooler weather of winter roll in across Victoria, it’s time to ensure your pets are well-prepared for the colder months.

Caring for your pets in the winter involves a few extra steps to keep them warm, healthy, and happy. And in this blog, we’re discussing some essential tips to help you provide the best care for your furry friends this winter

  1. Create a Cozy Sleeping Area

Just as you enjoy snuggling under warm blankets, your pets will appreciate a cozy bed to keep them warm. Add extra blankets to their bedding or invest in a thicker, insulated bed.

And while keeping pets indoors where possible is the safest way to manage cold weather risks, for outdoor pets, ensure they have a warm, waterproof, and windproof shelter, preferably elevated off the ground.

  1. Dress Your Pets for the Season

Short-haired breeds and older pets can benefit from an extra layer of warmth, which is why it can be helpful to consider dressing your pets in jackets, jumpers, or woolen knits, especially during walks. Hello, warm and sensible fashionista!

If your pets are comfortable, booties can also help keep their paws warm and dry, too.

  1. Exercise Safely in the Dark

With shorter daylight hours, you might find yourself walking your dog in the dark. Make sure your pet is visible with high-visibility accessories or reflective clothing.

Glow-in-the-dark toys can also be a fun and practical way to play safely in low-light conditions.

  1. Pay Extra Attention to Vulnerable Pets

Puppies, kittens, older pets, and those with health issues may feel the cold more intensely. Puppies and kittens have less fat and fur, while older pets may have arthritis that worsens in cold weather.

Be mindful of their needs and consider postponing outdoor activities if the weather is particularly harsh.

  1. Keep Small Animals Warm

Small pets like guinea pigs and birds also need protection from the cold. Move outdoor enclosures to sheltered areas and provide additional bedding.

For birds, ensure their cages are out of drafts and consider covering them at night.

“Cold-blooded” pets (ectothermic animals), such as reptiles and fish, require stable temperatures, so it’s crucial to monitor and adjust their heat sources accordingly. These pets don’t generate their own body heat but rely on environmental temperatures to regulate their body functions.

  1. Maintain a Healthy Diet and Hydration

Cold weather often means your animals have a larger appetite, making it extra important that they have access to enough nutritious food throughout the day.

If you live in areas that are particularly cold in the morning, check their water bowls each morning to ensure the water hasn’t frozen, and beyond that, consider sticking to plastic bowls over metal bowls to ensure their tongues don’t get stuck (yep, we’ve seen this many times before!).

  1. Provide Mental and Physical Stimulation

Even when it’s cold outside, pets need regular exercise and mental stimulation. Engage them with indoor activities like trick training, food-dispensing toys, and interactive games, like obstacle courses, to keep them active and prevent boredom.

  1. Monitor Senior Pets

Cold weather can exacerbate arthritis and joint pain in older pets. Which is why regular vet check-ups are essential to manage any health issues and ensure they receive the necessary care.
